In March 2012, I was one of the featured artists’ at Arts On Douglas in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. The exhibit Fifteen Preludes to Lyonia was all new work from a new kind of landscape for me and not to be found very often in Florida. It is an upland area, mostly scrub, a very few trees and very dry.
Two new books
I also put together a book with Lori Leech from L2Designs and Katherine Aimone from ArtsWrite. The title of the book is Lee Dunkel - Nine Portfolios: 1985-2008. It is 7x7 inches and 154 pages which includes 105 photographs, an essay, and professional reviews about my work during that time.
When I decided that my photographic career would be the Florida Landscape I had to devise a method that would keep me focused and productive. I was also interested in producing a body of work of some value but also of some variety. Creating portfolios from various areas gave me the opportunity to focus on a certain location for a specified period and then move onto another area for a set time. This method of working also gave me the opportunity to view and photograph with some depth.
Another benefit of this method of working is you find yourself seeing interesting images sometimes next to each other, as seen in the St. Johns River images below. These were taken on the same day merely by swinging my tripod to the right and moving slightly.
I can create a soft, even, but well lit image by using back light in certain situations. You can see two examples from the images below. The one on the left is from the Tomoka River Basin & Ocean Shore (image #0007) and the one on the right is from the Spruce Creek (image #0041) portfolio.
I was having a lot of trouble with my glasses fogging up in the summer while photographing. I went to a dive shop and was told that if I cleaned my glasses with plain Pledge it would alleviate this problem.
I’m excited to welcome you to my blog section. This is new territory for me but I think it will be a great way to share some of my photography as well as an opportunity to get to know some of you. Read on to see what will be included and how you can participate.
